Most everyone has done their share of whining and complaining. The Bible uses the word “murmuring” to describe this sin. Oh, did I say sin? Yes, have we forgotten that many of the Israelite nation (some estimate between a million and a half to two million, or even more) died in the wilderness because of their murmuring and lack of faith in Almighty God.

In Deuteronomy 1:27-28 Moses recorded the reason for God’s judgment against them. He said that they sat in their tents murmuring and saying that God hated them. Imagine that! How could they think this after the mighty hand of Jehovah brought them out of such terrible conditions in the land of Egypt? He had protected them by fighting against and defeating Pharaoh's army. He provided them with food and water. After all this, and they actually believed He brought them in to the wilderness to destroy them! They were discouraged and fearful. God was so angry that He refused to let them come into the promised land and enjoy the bounty that was in store for them there.
Is it possible that we could be just like Israel? The apostle Paul emphasizes this very example in Hebrews three to teach us to avoid whining and complaining.

Sometimes our living conditions may not be the best. Nothing here on earth will be perfect or without trials and hardships of one sort or another. We are only here for a short time as we pass through this land. There are better things in store for us in the wonderful place that Jesus is preparing. Why complain? Where is our faith?

Jesus gave us a simple cure for whining, complaining, and murmuring. He said giving is better than receiving (Acts 20:35), and serving is better than being served (Luke 22:26). We must look for ways to help others rather than dwelling on your own situation in life. Whiners are usually self-consumed. Rarely do they think about how they might be able to help others.

Let’s challenge ourselves. Every time we are tempted to whine and complain, find something to do for someone else! No matter what hardships and problems we may have in this life, we can maintain a positive Christian attitude by helping those around us.
