For over twelve years the River Road congregation was without elders. We went through the usual (and sometimes frustrating) men’s business meetings in order to make important and sensitive decisions affecting the congregation. What a joyful day it was, back in 1992, when we were able to appoint men to the office of elder!

Since that time, we have been impressed by the attitude and conduct of these men. Although some changes have taken place (Shelton Marty resigned in 1994 and moved to Alabama shortly thereafter, and Chandler Clark died a year ago last May) many tough decisions have had to be made. Good leadership has always been important in God’s plan for the church. We should have great respect, honor, and support for both Roger and Steve for the work that they do. “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine” (1 Timothy 5:17). Remember, as they lead and direct us, they are watching on behalf of our souls. “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation...Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:7, 17). How grateful we should be for our elders!

Across the brotherhood there is a decline in good, faithful, and courageous leaders in the church. Liberalism is creeping in, sometimes unawares even to some elderships and their congregations. The Scriptures tell us that elders must be sure of the truth, first for themselves, then take a stand with God against any and all error. Paul told the elders at Ephesus, “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). In the qualifications of elders Paul taught, “Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers” (Titus 1:9ff).

Continue to express kind words of encouragement to our good elders. Keep these brethren in your prayers for the work that they continue to do so well.
