The importance of teaching as a part of the work of the Lords' church cannot be overestimated. On a daily basis the early church “ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ” (Acts 5:42). The church's existence depends on the continual teaching of God's Word. The very future existence of this congregation will depend on the spiritual instruction given today.

Jesus commanded his disciples to make disciples of all nations and to teach the those disciples all that they had learned themselves (Matthew 28:19, 20). Paul gave the same instruction to Timothy. “And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). This means that every Christian is a teacher to some degree. We are required to live the life that has been influenced by the teaching of Christ and the apostles.

It is true, however, that everyone cannot be, and should not be, pressured into teaching in a classroom setting. If someone has the ability to teach in this way, they should develop it and use it. Public teachers should know that they have a great responsibility before God. James 3:1 says that teachers “shall receive greater condemnation” or stricter judgment (NKJV). This was not intended to discourage people from teaching, but to make them aware of the responsibilities teachers have.

Every congregation needs the right kind of teachers. We need men and women (younger and older) who are devoted to the Lord and the truth of his Word. We need people willing to sharpen their knowledge and skills to do the job of teaching.

There are all kinds of opportunities to do more work in God's kingdom. Unfortunately, as Jesus said, “the laborers are few.” There always seems to be a shortage of workers (and especially teachers) in a congregation. All of us need to consider the question, “How can I be more useful in the teaching programs of the congregation?” Let’s use our talents and be involved in teaching others about God, Jesus Christ, and the truth of salvation and Christian living.
