We Have An Anchor!

What comes to mind when you hear the term “anchor”? It might be described in the following way: a device usually of metal, attached to a ship or boat, cast overboard to hold the vessel in a particular place; a reliable or principal support; something that serves to hold an object firmly.

The Hebrews writer spoke of the Christian’s anchor when he said, “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 6:19-20).

We can trust all that God has ever said. It is impossible for Him to lie (Hebrews 6:13-18; Titus 1:2). Consider these truths regarding our anchor:

We have an anchor that holds In the storms of life. Take the time and read the words of Jesus as recorded in Matthew 7:24-27. When storms come in life, and they will, Christians can trust they possess the needed arsenal and aid to remain true.

We have an anchor that prevents drifting. The Hebrews writer stated: “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away…” (Hebrews 2:1-3). What impedes drifting? The Great Salvation, the gospel of Christ allows us a firm hold on faithfulness (Romans 1:16). When God’s Word is our ultimate standard and guide, when we hide it in our hearts, we have the necessary footing for spiritual stability (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 119:97).

We have an anchor that provides peace and assurance. When God makes a promise, it forever holds fast (Hebrews 6:13-20). Therefore, no matter what may come our way in life, we have the sure statements of the Lord upon which to count. Truly, “if God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). The promises of God tend to enliven the heart and thrill the soul in times both good and bad.

Christians can correctly declare: “We have an anchor!” The question is, will we hold fast to the rock that’s Christ until the end (Revelation 2:10; 14:13). Storms, winds, and waves will assault us in life. But ones who cling to Christ will never be washed away. Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?

DID ANYONE SPIT ON ME?

Every now and then somebody quits attending because someone had hurt his feelings. When we consider it, it doesn't make sense for us to take it out on God when He had nothing to do with what hurt our feelings. Someone suggested that asking these questions would help:

Did anyone spit on me?
They did on Jesus.
Did anyone beat me on the back?
They did on Him.
Did anyone press a crown of thorns on my brow?
They did on His.
Did anyone hang me on a cross?
They did Jesus.

They did all this to Him and more. Yet, He did not quit, because He came to pay the price for our salvation. Those who let anyone or anything cause them to forsake the Lord Jesus have forgotten the price paid for them.

Where Were You?

I came to church last Sunday,
I walked up and down the aisle.
I noticed your seat was vacant,
Said the master with a kindly smile.

Yes, I was at home, I answered,
Some folks from up Salem way,
Drove down for a weekend visit,
So we stayed in the house all day.

Or, I had an awful headache,
I had the roast in the pan,
Or, we overslept that morning,
But I always go whenever I can.

I went to the morning service,
Not over two months ago.
So much work must wail till Sunday,
Not enough time for Church, you know?

So the Master looked at me sadly,
And as He was about to speak,
I vowed He would not find me absent
Again on His Holy First Day of the week.
