THE PARENT’S PRAYER
Adapted — Author Unknown

O Master, make me a better parent. Teach me to understand my children, to listen patiently to what they say, and to answer their questions kindly. Keep me from interrupting them, talking back to them, and contradicting them. Make me as courteous to them as I want them to be to me. Give me the courage to confess my sins against my children and to ask their forgiveness when I know that I have wronged them.

May I not hurt the feelings of my children. Forbid that I should laugh at their mistakes or ridicule them as punishment. Let me not tempt them to lie and steal. Guide me hour by hour that I may demonstrate by all I say and do that honesty produces happiness.

Blind me to the little errors of my children, and help me to see good things that they do. Give me a ready word for honest praise when they do right.

Help me to grow up with my children, to treat them as children and not as adults. Let me not judge them according to the standards of adult behavior. Do not allow me to rob them of the opportunity to wait upon themselves, to think, to choose, and to make decisions.

Forbid that I should ever punish them for my own selfish satisfaction. May I grant them all their wishes that are reasonable and have the courage always to withhold a privilege which I know will harm them.

Make me so fair and just, so considerate and compassionate to my children, that they will have a genuine esteem for me. Make me worthy of being loved and imitated by my children.

Having done all of this, Father, that my children will be Thy children. May they turn in love and obedience to their Father in heaven.

ATTITUDES

Our attitude or feeling concerning many matters is reflected in our speech, action, appearance, etc. This is especially true regarding our service to the Lord and his church. People are often negligent in many areas and offer excuses for their failures, but their failures are the result of a poor attitude on their part. One can tell what a person really thinks about the church by his speech and action.

There was a man who came to a watchmaker with two hands of a clock, saying, “I want you to fix these hands. They haven’t kept time correctly for the last six months or more.”

“Where is the clock?” asked the watchmaker. “Why I left it at home,” was the answer. “But I must have the clock,” insisted the watchmaker. “Why, I tell you, there is nothing wrong with the clock except the hands,” the man replied.

As we read this story we think “What a foolish man that was.” He did not realize that when the hands of a clock don’t work, the trouble is not in the hands but in the heart of the clock. And yet we sometimes make the same mistake in diagnosing our own spiritual problems.

When we fail to attend church regularly, the problem is not in our feet or our automobile, but in our hearts. When we fail to give as we should, our hands are not at fault, but our hearts. When we do things which we should not do, we cannot blame our tongue, for “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

The word of God is a precise instrument for making attitude adjustments. Is your heart in tune with God’s word?

THE WIND’S NOT ALWAYS AT OUR BACKS

The wind’s not always at our back,
The sky is not always blue.
Sometimes we crave the things we lack,
And don’t know what to do.

Sometimes life’s an uphill ride,
With mountains we must climb.
At times the river’s deep and wide,
And crossing takes some time.

No one said that life is easy,
There are no guarantees.
So trust the Lord continually,
On calm or stormy seas.

The challenges we face today,
Prepare us for tomorrow.
For faith takes our fears away,
And peace replaces sorrow.

GOD’S PUMPKINS

Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. He opens you up, touches you deep inside, and scoops out all the yucky stuff - including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, and selfishness. Then he carves you a new smiling face and puts his light inside you to shine for all the world to see.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
