A LOOK AT CHANGE

REPENTANCE

In 2 Corinthians 7:10 Paul states that true repentance will be the result of godly sorrow. God made us in His own image. Therefore He gave us the opportunity to discern right and wrong, to know the difference between them, and to make our own decisions on what we will do with them. All have sinned and violated God’s law, and thus stand condemned before Him (Romans 3:23; 6:23). When we sin, we are separated from God (Isaiah 59:2). In order to return to Him we must repent. This is a marvelous conversion of the mind. A case in point is the Apostle Paul. Earlier he was known as Saul, one who made havoc of the church and consented to the death of Christians (Acts 8:3). This man had a complete change of heart (1 Timothy 1:12ff). Ultimately, he offered his own life for the cause of Jesus Christ.

BAPTISM

The transformation that takes place in Romans 6:1-18 is more than just being baptized or immersed in water. It is a change from death unto life. Prior to baptism we are dead in our sins. When we are baptized into Christ, we are baptized into His death. The Apostle went on to say, “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Jesus called baptism the new birth. We are born again of the water and the spirit (John 3:3ff). This transformation brings us into the spiritual body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13; cf. Galatians 3:27). Baptism is a transformation from being in an unsaved and condemned existence, to a saved and cleansed state. We have passed from death unto life (1 John 3:14).

A Child’s Prayer —

As a father was listening to his young son say his nightly prayers before bed, he heard him begin with, “Dear Harold.” A bit surprised, he waited for the boy to finish his prayer, then asked, “How come you called God, Harold?” The little boy seemed puzzled as looked up and said, “Well, that’s what they call Him in worship. When the men pray they say, “Our Father, who art in Heaven, Harold be Thy name.”

It Bears Repeating!

WHAT DO ELDERS DO?

They… watch for our souls, visit the hospitals, counsel, listen, attend funerals, sit through long meetings, spend time away from their families, pray, solve problems, win souls, restore the erring, greet visitors, teach, attend weddings, encourage weak members, spend time with God in prayer, study their Bibles, make sure the truth is preached, work for a living, cry with the broken-hearted, learn the names of new members, have people into their homes, are concerned about the church growth, rebuke the erring, listen to complaints, spend sleepless nights, love the unlovable, and try to maintain peace with those who are troublesome.

To sum it up, elders help us to get to heaven, by doing 1001 different things.

“Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor…” (1 Timothy 5:17). “…know them which labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13). — Via an old Flat Rock Visitor
