A GOOD WORD

Mark Twain once said, “I can live for two months on one good compliment.” We all know what he meant by that. It lifts your spirits to have someone say something genuinely nice to you or about you.

Solomon noted this human truth when he wrote: “Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad” (ESV Proverbs 12:25). The wording of this same verse in the New King James Version is “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.”

Haven’t you experienced those days when the morning began just right? Someone in your family noted something special about you that was meaningful to them. Your boss gave you a compliment when you walked through the door. And then, there was a note in the mail or a phone call from someone you love, and words of cheer entered your heart and carried you through the day.

Since we know how good it feels to receive such expressions from people, shouldn’t we spread the same joy to others? We ought to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to us. “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

Paul told the early Christians to “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:5,6).

A good word. You don’t have to be rich to have them or give them away to others. You don’t even have to be well known for these words to have an effect on others. Even complete strangers reap the benefit of receiving a good word from you.

We hear so many bad words in our world today, don’t we? Let’s start a campaign to bring a balance to what people hear. It all begins with a good word from me!

INTEGRITY
Dana Slingluff

When Jesus stood before Pilate to be tried, he proclaimed “for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.” Pilate sarcastically replied, “What is truth?” Certainly people today are growing more and more cynical, more and more pessimistic about the necessity of truth. What is truth? Is anyone telling it?

During the past twenty years, our respect and confidence in many time-honored institutions has been shattered. We hear daily of major scandals in government, business, sports, and education. But, even that must be viewed with skepticism because news is often slanted to promote the views of a certain network or broadcaster. Is it any wonder that people are becoming cynical about truth? It does almost seem as if the only use most people have for truth is to twist it to their own advantage, and that it is the one who is honest who suffers.

One of the greatest differences between those who are of the world and those who belong to the Lord is an attitude toward truth. Those who lie are following after the influence of Satan, the “father of lies” (John 8:44). On the other hand, Jesus said, “Those who are of the truth hear my voice” (John 18:37).

It’s possible to lie without ever speaking a word. It’s possible to live a lie. As Christians we should always be what we appear to be. We must be truthful with God, our fellow men, and ourselves. That is integrity. Someone has said a man’s reputation is what he is when others are looking; his character is what he is when no one else is around. That is integrity. A man’s integrity is important because it is the measure of his life as God views it.

What is integrity? It is to walk with complete honesty before God and your fellow man. It is to be faithful to your convictions at all times and to always be what you appear to be. The man who has integrity has nothing to hide. The man who has integrity has nothing to fear. We all need to say as Job, “Till I die, I will not remove my integrity from me” (Job 27:5). — Copied
