Fathers Are Honored by Obedient Children
Bobby Dockery

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?
says the Lord of hosts…” (Malachi 1:6).

THE CHRISTIAN HOME
Our fathers deserve to be honored, but there is always a danger that the honor we give them will be more a thing of bare formality than a genuine outpouring of respect. We may simply go through the motions without really honoring.

There is a spiritual dimension to this problem as well. All of us have two fathers—one on earth and One in heaven! It may be that we are guilty of a lack of genuine honor and respect where each of them is concerned!

1) Fathers are honored by obedience. Genuine respect is always linked to obedience in the Bible: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise” (Ephesians 6:1,2). Note the linkage between obedience and honor! A son or daughter who defies his or her father to his face… who deliberately disobeys a father’s instructions… who refuses to be submissive to a father’s wishes… is proclaiming loudly to the world, “I do not respect my father!” All the presents in the world on Father’s Day will not make up for a disrespectful attitude, which exhibits itself in disobedience. A present means nothing if there is no respect behind it—and respect obeys!

2) This is also true when it comes to our Father in heaven. God accused His people in the days of Malachi of refusing to honor Him because they refused to honor His instructions (Malachi 1:6; 2:9). Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me keep my commandments.” And then, in 1 John 2:3,4 we read, “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

3) We must obey God in every area of life! The Bible insists that “though Jesus was a son, yet He learned obedience…” (Hebrews 5:8,9). We must cultivate the same spirit of obedience as well! This is true when it comes to our standards of personal conduct, to the way we worship and serve God in the church, and to what we do in order to become His child! In the final analysis, the degree of your respect and honor for God is measured precisely by the extent of your obedience!

It is important to have the right kind of relationship with our earthly fathers—it is far more important to have the right kind of relationship with our Father who is in heaven. Are you honoring God with your obedience to Him?

ON BAPTISM
From the Wit and Wisdom of Marshall Keeble

Water is important in a man’s life. God created water first, then He created man out of dust. Without water, dust wouldn’t stick. There is power in the water.

There’s water in a car. There’s power in that water. If you don’t believe it, try going home without it in the radiator and you’ve got a burnt up car. Now, try to get a man to go to Heaven without water and you’ve got a burnt up man. Try going to Heaven without water, and you’ve got a burnt up church.

Some say you are saved before baptism. Christ said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” Now, you can’t say you’re saved before baptism-besides, you’re calling God a liar. You can’t go to Heaven calling God a liar. You can call me a liar, but not Him.

Some say, “A man is not saved and then baptized.” A woman doesn’t wash clothes because they are already clean. I’ve seen a lot of smart women, but not that smart. She washes clothes because they are dirty. Man is baptized because he’s dirty and needs to be cleansed.

The gospel is made up of five “pills” that will cure anything: first pill-- “hear,” second pill-- “believe,” third pill-- “repent,” fourth pill-- “confess,” fifth pill-- “baptism.” Take ‘em with water, and they’ll cure sin.

“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16).

(Brother Keeble is said to have baptized 40,000 people.)

you will reap greatness!

If you plant perseverance,
you will reap contentment!

If you plant consideration,
you will reap perspective!

If you plant hard work,
you will reap success!

If you plant forgiveness,
you will reap reconciliation!

In The Mail
We have received a card in the mail from Charles & Joan Tostige. It is placed on the board for you to read.

Hurricane Season
Every year as we enter into the hurricane season, we encourage our members to have a plan in case you need to evacuate. Please don’t forget your church family in those plans. They may need your help or they may be able to help you. Either way, let’s always remember that we are brothers and sisters in good times and bad.

Missions Update
We praise the God of heaven for the wonderful work that Erin and the team in Ghana have accomplished so far. In just two weeks they have baptized 65 precious souls into the Lord’s church. Erin writes a very interesting, and at times, humorous report. She received a proposal of marriage from a tribal chief. She would have been wife #9. The Ghanaian brethren have been teasing her with the nick-name “Queen Mother.” They were also able to take in some sight-seeing at a safari with a charging elephant. She has been mastering the bucket bath routine, doing without electricity at times, and craving some American food. We have posted these reports on the bulletin board for your enjoyment. Why not take a minute and read Erin’s encouraging words.
