Pray, Be Watchful, Persevere
Be Strong, Be Well — Sunday, July 26
In his illustration of the Christian armor in Ephesians chapter six, Paul admonished, “...praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (6:18).
Once we put on the protective and defensive armor, there are three things we must do.
Pray. The Christian fight is not political or fleshly, but spiritual. We fight against the evil forces of spiritual wickedness. Therefore, we depend on the greater powers of our heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. This help is accessed through prayer and supplications, for ourselves and “...all the saints.”
Be watchful. A soldier must be aware of his surroundings. Peter said, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world” (1 Peter 5:8, 9).
Persevere. No matter how exhausted and battered down we may become in the good fight of faith, we cannot afford to give up. We must hang on, keep moving forward, persist, and endure to the end, relying on the strength only the Lord can provide.
At the end of the resurrection chapter, we’re told, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:57, 58). —Chris
